ARTIST STATEMENT

In my artistic practice, I am deeply attracted to symbolism and the unexpected. While I have dabbled in everything from embellishing furniture with custom pyrography designs to crafting chainmaille garments and accessories, I consider block printing, wearable art, and custom textiles to be my primary mediums. All of my work falls under the heading of, 'Haunted, but not cursed.' It started out as a silly phrase I would use to explain what items attracted me when I was perusing thrift shops and fabric stores for materials, but over time, it's grown to be a core identifier of my aesthetic.

As an artist, I am captivated by the symbolic. Throughout history and across cultures, humans have always utilized symbols to both deliver and obscure messages. From the mundane to the arcane, I am fascinated by the ways we both derive and hide meanings in symbolic representations of various objects and feelings. A few of my favorite sources of symbolism and inspiration which often turn up in my work are: classic print designers such as William Morris, tattoo culture, Gothic architecture, filigree of the types often seen in old world European furniture and armor designs, biological sciences with a particular emphasis on skeletal anatomy, and art movements like the Dutch Golden Age and Art Nouveau.

A connective thread that appears in almost all of my work is an emphasis on the ways the visual impacts how we feel and how we interact. I love street art as wearable art for its accessibility and the ways that it can change not only how the wearer feels about their self but also the way others view them and interact with them. I often create functional pieces for living environments because I am profoundly affected by how I feel in my own living space. I believe that, as a culture, the West has neglected form in favor of function in ways which often leave us feeling disconnected and disenchanted. My work seeks to bring the romance of my inner life into external spaces. It is a rejection of brutalism, capitalism, and choosing efficiency over humanity. My pieces are an invitation to join me in a space ruled by possibility and a belief that beauty for the sake of beauty is a gift to us all and should be accessible to everyone.
